For example, if the player locked out the Authority check when they Talk to Titus Hardie the first time, they will automatically be able to retry if put a point into Authority after leveling up. The simplest method to retry a locked white check is to put a skill point into the relevant skill. The others on black backgrounds have not reset yet, but will if a point is put into the relevant skill, or if the right person has been spoken to. Those are unlocked based on the actions of the player and can be retried. The first six checks, starting with "The Hanged Man," are on white backgrounds.
